Why US Athlete’s Play Overseas
Whether it’s Christian Pulisic at Chelsea or Jordan Loyd for Monaco’s basketball team, the most common reason for athletes’ international moves is improved access to competition. For example, while Major League Soccer is the least popular of the major professional sports leagues in the US, in the UK and Europe, soccer is the most popular sport by far.
The competition is therefore much fiercer, with huge salaries offered to the sport’s top talent. Therefore, it makes sense for people such as Zack Steffen the American soccer player to go to where the competition is most developed. The same is the case for Mason Cox, who has moved to Australia to compete in the Australian Football League (AFL).
Not even the US sporting capitals can offer lucrative contracts for the AFL, with the game only played at a major league level in Australia. In the case of international basketball players, top US athletes are in hot demand, so moving can provide hefty pay packages and perks. Europea can also offer an alternative lifestyle to what’s available in the US that simply appeals to some athletes. Below, we’ve covered the career of Mason Cox AFL star.
Mason Cox AFL Player
Born in 1991 and raised near Dallas, Texas, Mason Cox’s move to play Australian Rules Football may seem incredibly random. This is because, in part, it is. While playing basketball for Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Conference, Cox was scouted and invited to attend the AFL Draft Combine, a gathering of potential new talents that puts their skills to the test.
Despite knowing little about the sport, he scored well on the tests and was invited to play for the successful Collingwood Football Club. At 6 ft 11 inches, Cox’s height is a huge advantage in AFL, and he has been a consistent goal-scorer for the team. He has appeared in two Grand Final games for the team, one of which was won.
In an interview with 60 Minutes in 2023, Cox claimed that the Australian fans have embraced him. According to Mason Cox AFL player, sections of the Collingwood crow chant, “USA!” every time he has possession of the ball.
Zack Steffen American Soccer Player in the EFL
Zack Steffen the American soccer player was born April 2, 1995, and despite his US nationality, he spent a good stint playing for international teams. This included a five-year stint with English Premier League team Manchester City, as well as loan periods for a German Bundesliga 2 team.
