Legal Sports Betting Options in Missouri
It may take until December 2025 for the Missouri betting apps to launch. Before then, the state must work with the Missouri Gaming Commission to formulate specific rules and regulations. What is known, though, is that betting will be available to players 21 and older, and college betting on local events will be legal.
Legal Bet Types
Once Missouri sports betting launches, we expect that locals will be permitted to wager on all major US sports leagues, including the NFL, NHL, MLB, and NBA. There will also be a range of international events such as golf, tennis, and Formula 1. As for bet types, you can expect to have options such as moneylines, totals, and parlay bets among others. The expected bet options include:
- Moneyline
- Totals
- Spread betting
- Parlays
- Same Game Parlays
- Teasers
Once betting is legalized, it's important that you don't make wagers on markets that you don't understand. It's best to start with single moneyline bets on a team or player to win. With experience, experiments with parlays, point spreads, and totals. It's also worth undertaking an odds comparison with different bookmakers to secure the best payouts.
What You Cannot Bet on in MO
As there are yet to be any Missouri betting apps launched, all betting remains prohibited in the state. It's too early to say what will be prohibited exactly, but we do know that college sports betting will be authorized on local teams. This isn't always the case in legal betting states, so college sports fans should count themselves lucky. The following are some events that may be restricted once it launches:
- Politics
- Entertainment and award ceremonies
- ESports
- Individual player prop bets
Daily Fantasy Sports
In 2016, Missouri officially legalized daily fantasy sports platforms as long as they apply for a state permit. Daily fantasy sports (DFS) are special competitions that require users to draft fantasy lineups of players from a sports league within a salary. Contestants earn points based on the real-life performances of their lineup, with top-scoring contestants winning cash prizes.
DFS is classified as a game of skill rather than gambling. However, sites such as FanDuel and DraftKings which offer DFS in the state already, may soon be licensed Missouri sportsbooks, giving customers access to a full suite of sports products.
