It has been announced that the state of Massachusetts has welcomed a new player in the online sports betting market. This comes after Bally Bet launched its online betting platform recently, joining a number of other big names.
The launch marks an important expansion in the state’s online sports betting sector, increasing the number of mobile betting platforms to seven. The arrival of Bally Bet comes nearly 18 months after the company received approval from state regulators, enhancing competition among existing platforms which include BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, ESPN Bet, Fanatics, and FanDuel.
Unanimous Vote from Regulators
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission played an important role in the launch of Bally Bet, with regulators voting unanimously to grant the operator the required certificate of operations.
Brett Calapp, Chief Operating Officer of Bally’s North America interactive division, expressed his gratitude toward the commission for its support throughout the approval process, which faced a number of hurdles.
He thanked regulators for their efficiency in sorting out the approval and certification and said that he appreciated the communication and collaboration of those who were involved.
Calapp added:
We’re super excited to go live in Massachusetts, a state with such a rich sports history, a state where sports is part of the fabric of the community. And we can’t wait to participate in the entertainment, the fun, and excitement of sports in your state.
Massachusetts residents not only have the newly launched online options but also the choice of placing bets in person at one of the three physical locations. This includes Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville, MGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor in Everett.
Online betting still dominates the market in the state, with in-person wagers accounting for less than two percent of the total monthly betting volume.
Impressive Betting Activity in May
According to recent figures released by the Gaming Commission, Massachusetts saw impressive betting activity in May with $587.26 million wagered on sports.
The data shows that sports betting activity generated around $57 million in taxable gaming revenue for operators and contributed nearly $11.5 million in taxes to the state. DraftKings continued to lead the way in May, with the operator accounting for just over half of the total bets placed over the course of the month.
Since the legalization of sports betting in the state in early 2023, the industry has been a boon for the state’s finances. Figures show that betting has generated around $149.18 million in state taxes and assessments. This revenue highlights the strong interest in sports betting among Massachusetts residents, particularly when it comes to online betting.
The expansion of online sports betting platforms like Bally Bet is expected to further enhance this growth, providing bettors with more options and boosting the state’s economic benefits from the industry.
With Bally Bet having now entered the market, it will lead to increased competition among sports betting operators. This could lead to more promotions and deals for bettors to take advantage of, as operators try to increase their market share.
