Missouri’s sports betting fans may soon be able to place legal online wagers, as state regulators confirm a potential launch as early as June 30th. The Missouri Gaming Commission (MGC) is progressing with regulations that keep the state’s mobile sports betting launch on track for a summer debut.
The MGC’s recent meeting advanced a complex set of regulations, including processes for financial reporting, wagering eligibility, and personal licenses. These regulations are crucial for the state’s legal sports betting framework. The next step involves advancing the proposed rules to the governor’s office and the Secretary of State for review, followed by a mandatory 30-day public comment period, expected to begin by the end of February 2025.
The MGC is also preparing to finalize licensing applications by early March, giving interested sportsbooks approximately two months to submit their applications. The Commission is expected to vote on application approvals at meetings scheduled for either May 28th or June 25th, setting the stage for a go-live date around June 30th.
When asked why such a long timeframe, MGC Chairman Jan Zimmerman stated:
Why couldn’t we flip a switch the next day? There’s just so much more to it than that.
Missouri is set to have up to 21 mobile sportsbooks, with the exact number depending on how the Attorney General’s office interprets the 2024 ballot measure. Major operators like DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars are expected to launch in the state, alongside potential entries from PENN Entertainment, Bally’s, Bet365, Fanatics, BetRivers, and Hard Rock Bet.
With the passage of Amendment 2, Missouri has legalized both online and retail sports betting. The state’s six major professional sports organizations, including the Kansas City Chiefs and the St. Louis Cardinals, can apply for mobile sportsbook licenses and establish retail betting locations near their stadiums.
The MGC is committed to ensuring fair and transparent operations, focusing on responsible gaming practices. Sports betting legalization is expected to significantly impact Missouri, generating revenue for the state and creating new job opportunities.
Missouri is poised to become the 31st state to offer legal statewide mobile sports betting, marking a new chapter for sports fans and the state’s economy. As the regulatory framework solidifies and operators prepare for launch, the potential for increased revenue, job creation, and enhanced entertainment options becomes increasingly tangible.
The MGC’s commitment to responsible gaming and transparent operations will be crucial in ensuring the long-term success of this new market. With a potential launch date rapidly approaching, Missourians can anticipate a summer filled with exciting opportunities to engage with their favorite sports in a safe and regulated environment.
