On September 10, 2024, Mauricio Pochettino was officially announced as the new head coach of the US Men’s National Soccer Team. This was confirmed by statements from both Pochettino and the US Soccer sporting director, Matt Crocker. The news comes following the team’s extremely disappointing elimination from the COPA America 2024 and the increasing pressure to replace coach Gregg Berhalter.

A Proven Leader: Pochettino’s Player and Managerial Successes

Mauricio Pochettino is a professional football manager and former player born in Murphy, Argentina. His career began when, at 13 years old, he was scouted by Newell’s Old Boys sports club director Jorge Solari and his future manager Marcelo Bielsa. In 1994, he signed for RCD Espanyol, where he was a center back for 6.5 years.

In January 2001, Pochettino signed for another well-known football club – Paris Saint-Germain. He played for them until July 2003, when he was transferred to Bordeaux, where he stayed for the 2003-2004 season. In the summer of 2004, the player transferred back to RCD Espanyol, but a couple of years later, in 2006, he announced his retirement at the age of 34.

In the following years, Pochettino acquired a master’s degree in sports management and underwent training to become a coach. So far, his coaching career is defined by his impressive track record at some of Europe’s top clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain. At Tottenham, he led the team to the 2019 UEFA Champions League final, which marked the club’s greatest achievement in recent history.

During his time in Paris, Pochettino guided PSG to a Ligue 1 title and several domestic cups, solidifying his reputation as a successful manager. Known for his tactical acumen and ability to develop young players, Pochettino nurtured talents like Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé.

This makes him a perfect fit for the USMNT as they look to build a competitive team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His focus on developing youth will be crucial in maximizing the potential of promising American players like Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna. The era of Pochettino begins with lots of hopes for the future of the USMNT.

Challenges and Opportunities on the Road to 2026

Being the head coach for the USMNT will be a challenge for Pochettino, who, so far, has only coached European soccer teams, which have entirely different schedules and dynamics. Both fans and media have high expectations of him, hoping he’ll be able to unite the players and find a winning strategy for them.

I see a group of players full of talent and potential, and together, we’re going to build something special that the whole nation can be proud of.

– said Mauricio Pochettino in his statement.

With emerging stars like Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna, and Yunus Musah, anything is possible. Despite the rather disappointing USMNT elimination in the 2024 COPA America following a 1-0 loss to Uruguay, the team has the potential to recover and prepare for the upcoming 2026 World Cup. This, however, will take some time and effort from Pochettino and the entire team.
