Leading game and sports betting group Entain has released the results of a study that reveals tennis is the second most popular sport to bet on in terms of in-play betting in the US and UK and the fifth most popular betting sport overall. Tennis falls just second to football and basketball, respectively.

Momentum Swings are the Biggest Reason for Popularity

In-play tennis betting can be broken down into its top three markets, namely Match Betting, Current Game Winner, and Set Winner. Match Betting is the most popular of the three.

One of the biggest reasons for the popularity of these bets is momentum swings. Entain explains, “This is about which player is in control at any point of the match”, and then says, “the mentally draining aspect of the sport” is a significant factor in determining the results.

The Entain report was released shortly after the end of the 2025 Australian Open, where Jannik Sinner and Madison Keys were victorious and clinched their respective Grand Slam titles. Entain has said that the Australian Open remains a popular tennis tournament to bet on, despite the time zone differences making it less ideal for US bettors.

It is interesting to note that tennis has been consistently outperforming American Football for three years now when it comes to in-play betting. In the US, basketball is the only sport with more in-play betting volume. In the UK, the number one performing sport for in-play betting is soccer.

Regarding the most popular tennis tournaments to bet on, the US Open remains in the top position, with the French Open and Wimbledon in second and third position, respectively.

60% of Tennis Bets on Men’s Tournaments

Interestingly, Entain highlighted that 60% of all tennis bets are placed on men’s tournaments. These feature best-of-5-set matches, while women’s are only a best-of-3 game format. The study also noted a sense of national pride when it comes to tennis betting. Many bettors choose to bet on players from their country.

Entain is always looking to add more markets, which means more in-play betting options to meet the growing demand for tennis betting. Bet Builders have become very popular in sports such as soccer and football and will potentially pave the way for their introduction to the tennis betting market.
