Ice Hockey Prop Bets
Ice hockey proposition bets (prop bets) are wagers on events indirectly related to the outcome of a game. There are two types of prop bets: player props and game props.
There are both skill-based and luck-based proposition bets. Skill-based props let you bet on things related to in-game performances, while luck-based options offer odds for random acts of chance like which team commits the first penalty.
Skill-Based Player Performance Props
- Anytime goal scorer
- Total assists
- Total saves
Skill-Based Team Performance Props
- Total shots on goal
- Team with the most hits
- Total team PIMs
Skill-based player props are wagers on individual player performances like total goals, total assists, total points, or anytime goal scorer. In a high variance sport like hockey, player performance is highly volatile, so it helps to find the best odds before you place any bets.
Skill-based team props are similar, but for the entire team. Most consider things like total shots on goal, penalties in minutes (PIMs), total faceoffs won, or any team-based statistical category that can be reasonably predicted by data analysis as skill-based team props.
Luck-BasedPlayer Performance Props
- Total Shots Odd or Even
- Player to Record the First Shot
- Total Saves Odd or Even
Luck-Based Team Performance Props
- The Grand Salami
- Total Faceoffs Won
- Total Goals Odd or Even
Luck-based player props are more random than their skill-based counterparts. For instance, the total number of shots on goal a player takes in a game is extraordinarily luck-based, as there is no way to know exactly how many times they attempt a shot, if they hit the net, or has their attempt blocked.
Luck-based team props are along the same lines. The Grand Salami is a unique luck-based prop. It combines the over/under markets for all the games on a day's slate. If the grand salami on a five-game slate is 27.5, and there are 28 total goals scored that night, the over bettor wins.
Prop bets aren't available at all sportsbooks and rules surrounding them vary by state. Our favorite place to make prop bets is BetRivers Pennsylvania. If you're located in the Keystone State, be sure to check out our BetRivers sportsbook review PA to find out why it's a smart choice.

Prop betting is hugely popular for ice hockey betting because they present you with more options. If you're struggling to find value in the game results markets, you can turn to these markets for other areas of opportunity.
Lastly, some ice hockey betting sites offer odds boosts for nightly prop bets. It's worth investigating these further to see if there's value to be had.
